Self-care : The 50-40-30-20-10 rule

In today’s fast paced life, finding time for oneself is the most challenging thing. Due to busy lifestyles, spending time on self-care has become very rare. We hardly spend any time nourishing our mind, body, and soul. 

A well planned self-care routine can help you to relieve tension, improve your mood, relax your mind, and strengthen your soul. You just need 150 minutes from your daily routine in order to have a positively transformed version of yourself.  

Below we have listed 5 self-care routine activities that can do wonders for your mind, body and soul. 

50 minutes – Meditation (Nourish your Soul)

Swami Vivekananda had once said, “Meditation can turn fools into sages but unfortunately fools never meditate.” 

As per him, The highest meditation is to think of nothing. If you can remain one moment without thought, great power will come.” The meditative state is the highest state of existence. The aim of meditation is not the gratification of your body but for the nourishment of your soul. 

If in the beginning, you are unable to concentrate, it’s ok! Let the mind wander, don’t try to push too hard. Just make it a self-care routine by sitting in a room, closing your eyes and focusing on your breath. 

Reading good non-fiction books can also help in improving concentration and in some cases it is equivalent to doing meditation itself. So get hold of some good reads and start the journey of self discovery now.

40 minutes – Do what you love 

For very few lucky ones, their hobbies earn them a living. Most of us spend a large part of our day in the things that we don’t really enjoy.  But spending just 40 minutes on your favourite hobby can do wonders.

Do what you love or wish to do… be it driving, dancing, singing, painting, running, reading, photography, playing with pets and kids etc. Just do it for 40 minutes. Make it a self-care routine. 

These 40 minutes can act as a booster dose for the rest of the day. Also, you will have a sense of gratification after spending a part of your day doing something that you once used to do more often.

30 mins – Walk or Jog

Just a 30 minutes of intense walk can actually help in boosting metabolism and burning fat. A brisk walk firms and tones the muscles in your legs and improves your blood circulation.

In case you find it boring walking alone, start a walking routine with a buddy so you can chat and keep each other motivated to keep going every day. There are also many podcasts available to listen to or you can even enjoy your favourite music as you move along. 

So never skip this 30 minutes of self-care activity.

20 mins –  Self-grooming

Everyone wants to look presentable and well-groomed all the time. But visiting a spa or a parlour is not possible on a regular basis. 

Just 20 minutes of a self-care routine to groom your hair, face, nails, body can give amazing results. To make it interesting you can prepare a plan like below:

  • Monday: Hair care (apply oil generously into the scalp and leave it overnight)
  • Tuesday: Nails care (trimming, polishing, cleaning)
  • Wednesday: Facial (based on your skin type, a pack can be prepared with stuff easily found in the kitchen)
  • Thursday: Hand / Leg / Face message (use oil for best results)
  • Friday: Eye / Tooth/ Ear care 
  • Saturday: Extended bath time 

10 mins – A cup of green tea 

Do you know why it is not easy to guess the age of an average Japanese person? Out of many reasons the most prominent reason is their green tea consumption routine

Green tea is a powerful antioxidant that keeps cells from ageing and helps prevent chronic diseases like high blood pressure and diabetes. 

A 10 minutes green tea session is an excellent way to lead a stress free and healthy life.

There is absolutely nothing wrong in putting yourself first, for a good reason. It will help you give the rest of the world your best. Self-care, when regularly practiced, can result in numerous benefits such as reduced stress, improved immune system, increased productivity, and higher self-esteem.
